What this is

Best Restaurants California is a recognition program for restaurants in California, launched in 2026. It gives three awards — Golden Standard, Spotless Kitchen and Neighborhood Cornerstone — on the basis of nominations from the public, checked by hand against the official county health inspection record.

It started because we spend our working days inside these records, and kept noticing the same thing: the restaurants that are meticulous about the kitchen rarely get any credit for it. The dining room gets written about. The walk-in never does.

No award is for sale. Where we visit, we book under our own names and pay the full bill.

What it is not

• Not affiliated with, endorsed by, or speaking for any county health department, the California Department of Public Health, or any other agency.
• Not a certification of current compliance. Only the county can tell you a restaurant’s standing today.
• Not a paid program: no entry fees, no consideration fees, no advertising sold to nominees or recipients.
• Not a ranking. No top fifties, no countdowns, and no negative lists.

Corrections

If we publish something inaccurate about a restaurant — a record misread, an address wrong, an award attributed to the wrong location — write to us and we will correct it promptly and say that we did. Restaurants may also ask to be removed from consideration entirely, and that request is honored without argument.
